Pride Project

It is Pride month and I am a Software Engineer. So lets combine the two!

Not only am I a Software Engineer but I also am the parent of two LGBTQ teens. Teen #1 identifies as non-binary and Teen #2 is transgender. They really are the best kids, if I do say so myself. I consider myself lucky every single day to have them in my life.

With that being said me and my teens realize there are LGBTQ youth out there that don’t have the love and support that they do. They feel like they are alone and always under attack. They feel like that can’t really be themselves.

Since it is June and Pride month and I need to keep building, we got together and decided to build a little something. We thought we could build a little social site in order to reach out to others. To make connections in the digital space. To let others know they are supported and not alone.

The teens are in charge of thinking up what they want to see. Basically they are the client. I tasked them with thinking how they want to do it and how they want it to look.

I get to build it according to their specs. I went with the reliable and popular MERN(MongoDB, Express, React and Node)stack. For me and my brain it just makes sense to let let Javascript drive from the frontend to the backend.

A user has the ability to signup for an account and login with that account.

A user can make posts that include various media types(pics, gifs, small video files).

A user has the ability to leave comments on other member’s posts.

A user can leave likes on posts.

A user can follow and unfollow other members.

We are still in the build process. The backend it pretty much complete. Now we are arranging the frontend.

I will let you know how it turns out.
